Graham Spy – Mom says these are large, soft, early apples that make wonderful, thick applesauce with very little water and no sugar.
Wealthy – This is Mom’s favorite apple, and happens to also be my and my husband’s favorite apple, too. It is delicious for eating, and makes a very pretty and delicious applesauce. OrangePippin.com describes Wealthy apples as Excellent dessert and multi-use apple, picked a few weeks early for cooking. Beautiful fruit ripens to bright red across the surface. Crisp, juicy flesh. Refreshing, sprightly, vinous flavor.
McIntosh -An antique variety that has stood that test of time, and is still sold in stores today. The difference between one bought in the store and one bought in the orchard is flavor. Tree ripened will always taste better than the apples in the store that are picked green.
Grimes Golden – crisp and sweet, with a hint of rich spiciness. Most likely a parent of Golden Delicious, which a richer, sweeter flavor.
Jonathan – I have always loved Jonathan apples. They have a clear, bright red skin and a bright white flesh. They make a wonderful Waldorf salad, good for cooking, and simply good for eating. orangepippin.com describes it as: A classic American variety, and widely regarded as one of the best flavoured with a good sweet/sharp balance.
Red Spy – This is an old variety, originating in NY in the 1800’s. It is similar to Northern Spy but with a much redder skin and bright stripes. The fruit is very tender and juicy and great for cooking.
Steel Red – after having a sample, Mom has had customers say, “Now that is how an apple is supposed to taste!”
Northern Spy – This variety has always been known as “the pie apple.” It is juicy, crunchy, good for eating, and holds it shape for cooking.
